Thousands of users of the 2nd generation model of Google’s streaming device, Chromecast, encountered a sudden error when their device could no longer connect to the wifi. An error code, numbered sscr-s4010-2203-2280-g, which said that the Chromecast is an ‘untrusted device’ popped up, leaving many befuddled.
However, the incident happened because the authentication certificate of the Google Chromecast 2nd Generation had expired globally. The Chromecast 2nd Generation was released in 2015 and as some users pointed out, its authentication certificate has expired. Notably, Google had discontinued the Chromecast line of streaming devices in August 2024, but had said then that it would continue to provide software and firmware updates for the same. The issue was shared on Google’s user community and the company has acknowledged the problem, adding that they are working for a fix. However, it is not clear yet when the devices will be back up and working.

Why Did Google Discontinue The Chromecast?
Google discontinued the Chromecast line in August 2024, replacing it with the more advanced Google TV Streamer. The new device offers enhanced performance, increased storage, and smart home integration, reflecting Google’s shift towards a more feature-rich streaming experience. Google released multiple Chromecast generations between 2013 and 2022, evolving from simple HDMI streaming devices to models with 4K support and Google TV integration. Key versions included the original Chromecast (2013), Chromecast Ultra (2016), and Chromecast with Google TV (2020, 4K and HD).
