The Google Meet app for Android TV and Google TV probably isn’t something that’s widely used, but it is rather handy. However, it’s looking like Google is preparing to shut down the app soon.
Google Meet first made its way to Android TV OS back in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, back when it was still called Duo. The app was designed to allow users to hook up a webcam to their TV and be able to participate in video calls on the big screen.
But it appears Google is ending that option soon.
Code within the latest update to Google Meet for Android TV and Google TV spotted by Android Authority directly suggests that Google is preparing to shut down the app, specifically mentioning “depreciation” and saying:
Soon you won’t be able to use Google Meet on your Android TV to make calls. Click below for alternatives and to learn more.
This notice isn’t live in the app just yet, we’ve confirmed in testing, but its presence makes Google’s intentions quite clear. Soon, the app will shut down.
Google did the same thing a few months ago on Samsung TVs, where Meet shut down in March, but it’s a surprise to see the same happen on the company’s own platform seeing as Google TV added support for “Call Notifications” just earlier this year, with Meet being the app that enables that.
In any case, the app still works for now, but if you’re using it, it’d probably be wise to start looking for alternatives.
