Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a $3 billion investment today to expand Azure’s infrastructure in India. He made this announcement at the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru. This investment will grow Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure and support AI development.
Nadella discussed the role of infrastructure in AI development, stating that AI relies on the entire computing stack. Microsoft currently operates over 60 regions and 300 data centres worldwide, including centres in Central, South, and West India. The new investment will expand these operations across the country.
Microsoft has also pledged to train 10 million individuals in AI skills by 2030 as part of its ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative. Globally, the company plans to invest approximately $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to develop AI-enabled data centres for training models and deploying AI and cloud solutions.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nadella discussed India’s vision for an AI-driven future. He appreciated India’s AI mission, entrepreneurial energy, and demographic advantages. In a post on X, he reiterated Microsoft’s commitment to making India AI-first. PM Modi responded positively, acknowledging Microsoft’s expansion and its alignment with India’s tech goals.

Nadella introduced a metric for AI efficiency—”tokens per dollar per watt”—and linked it to future economic growth, predicting its importance in discussions about GDP and industrial efficiency. As part of this investment, Microsoft will integrate renewable energy and sustainable practices into its data centres, incorporating innovations like liquid-cooled AI accelerators, zero-waste construction, and facilities with no water usage.
Nadella’s visit to India includes stops in Bengaluru and Delhi as part of the AI Tour. In Hyderabad, he met Telangana’s Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to discuss technology priorities like AI, generative AI, and cloud initiatives.
Microsoft India employs over 20,000 people across 10 cities, with Hyderabad housing 10,000 of them. For the fiscal year ending March 30, Microsoft India reported a 38.44% increase in net profit, reflecting growth in cloud adoption and AI integration.
