Major operating system releases are often met with bugs, and iOS 18 appears to be no exception. Some of those with iPhones running Apple’s newest mobile OS are complaining about inconsistent touch responses, freezing screens, and difficulty swiping or tapping.

According to 9to5Mac, the problem has cropped up on the iPhone 16 Pro series. On Reddit, a 16 Pro Max owner said the phone is “not registering taps and swipes near the camera control button. But it is also occasionally throughout the whole screen.”

Other Redditors are reporting similar problems on older models.

“Since updating my 12 mini I’ve had moments of a frozen screen, no responsive to any taps or side swipes, but swiping to home still functional,” one person wrote.

“iOS 18 issue. I started seeing this on my 15 pro since I was on dev 18.1 beta 3 and still see it on 16 pro. mostly happens with apps that have lists of items like Reddit or twitter but closing reopening fixes it,” added another.

The new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 phones offers quick access to the phone’s Camera app, and allows people to adjust settings by swiping back and forth after a light press. When you’re touching that Camera Control slider, however, other touches are ignored. You can see that in action in this video from Mastodon users Khaos Tian.

Apple has yet to respond to these issues, but a case may help. We have suggestions for the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16 Pro Max.
