Microsoft announced today that it is replacing the Remote Desktop app for Windows with the more modern Windows app.

“Starting May 27, 2025, the Remote Desktop app for Windows from the Microsoft Store will no longer be supported or available for download and installation,” Hillary Braun writes on Microsoft’s Tech Community blog. “Users must transition to Windows App to ensure continued access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box.”

You can’t say you weren’t warned: Microsoft first revealed that it would replace the Remote Desktop app with the Windows app in September 2024, and it delivered the first stable version of that latter app about two weeks later.

Braun extols the virtues of the Windows app, which offers unified access to the services noted in the above quote, and features customizable home screens, multi-monitor support, and dynamic display resolutions, plus enhanced remote work experiences like device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimizations, and easy account switching.

Connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked after May 27, 2025, Microsoft says, and the Remote Desktop app will no longer be supported.

That said, users who connect to remote desktops from the Remote Desktop app should use Remote Desktop Connection until support for this connection type is available in the Windows App. Microsoft Learn explains which features are still missing in the Windows app.
