Generative AI has revolutionized industries, but it has also introduced unprecedented cybersecurity threats. The launch of DeepSeek, an open-source AI model, has heightened these concerns, adding to the already significant risks posed by major players like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
As someone with over four decades in cybersecurity and executive leadership, I’ve witnessed firsthand how technological advancements can simultaneously enhance and undermine security. If left unchecked, the current trajectory of Gen AI presents a massive risk to businesses, governments, and individuals globally.
We must address the cybersecurity challenges inherent in Gen AI to prevent an explosion of AI-driven cybercrime, intelligence theft, and national security threats. The time for decisive action is now.
How GenAI is transforming cybercrime
The most pressing concern with Gen AI is its capacity to create highly sophisticated, automated cyberattacks. AI models enable attackers to craft nearly undetectable phishing emails, generate malware on demand, and even bypass traditional security protocols, unlike in the past when cybercriminals relied on basic social engineering tactics that exploited human error.
The evolution of phishing attacks is a prime example. Previously, users could identify phishing attempts by looking for grammar mistakes or inconsistencies in emails. Now, AI-generated phishing emails are perfectly structured, personalized, and contextually relevant—making them nearly impossible to distinguish from legitimate communications.
Moreover, AI models can generate malicious code in seconds. While responsible AI developers, such as OpenAI, attempt to restrict malicious code generation, some newer open-source models give cybercriminals free rein to train AI models specifically for exploitation, creating customized attacks for each target.
The open-source dilemma: balancing innovation and security
The proliferation of open-source models is one of the biggest vulnerabilities in the Gen AI market. While open-source AI fosters innovation and accessibility, it also removes critical security barriers.
Once released, open-source models are nearly impossible to regulate, unlike proprietary AI models, which can be monitored and controlled. This creates a cybersecurity nightmare, as adversaries—including foreign governments and cybercriminal organizations—can modify these models to conduct large-scale cyber warfare, espionage, and financial fraud.
Unrestricted AI access poses a direct threat to national security, with intelligence agencies around the world already raising concerns about AI models falling into the hands of adversaries. If open-source Gen AI continues to grow without safeguards, we risk widespread exploitation of sensitive corporate and government data.
Regulatory gaps: are we prepared?
Despite the clear threats, regulatory efforts to control AI remain slow and fragmented. While policymakers in the U.S. are still debating AI governance, foreign adversaries are moving quickly to harness AI for offensive cyber operations. Most discussions fail to address the urgency of cybersecurity risks, so American companies are moving forward on their own. For example, Google announced that it is overhauling the principles governing how it uses artificial intelligence and other advanced technology. The company removed language promising not to pursue “technologies that cause or are likely to cause overall harm,” “weapons or other technologies whose principal purpose or implementation is to cause or directly facilitate injury to people,” “technologies that gather or use information for surveillance violating internationally accepted norms,” and “technologies whose purpose contravenes widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.”
The European Union has also taken steps with its AI Act, which aims to regulate high-risk AI applications, but enforcement remains a challenge. In the U.S., there is no cohesive federal strategy that mandates accountability for AI developers, although there are discussions about AI security standards.
We need a global effort to establish and enforce AI security standards, including:
Stronger oversight of AI developers: Companies developing Gen AI must implement strict security measures, including real-time threat monitoring and proactive cybersecurity testing.
Controlled access to AI models: Open-source AI should not be freely available without security checkpoints. Governments and industry leaders must collaborate on frameworks that ensure responsible AI use.
AI-driven cybersecurity solutions: We must invest in AI-powered security systems that can detect and neutralize AI-driven attacks in real time, instead of allowing AI to be a tool for cybercriminals.
Identity and access management solutions: We need tools like Photolok, a passwordless login using stenographic photos with randomization, which protects against AI bad actors.
The future of cybersecurity in the GenAI era
The rise of Gen AI represents both a technological breakthrough and a cybersecurity crisis. While AI has limitless potential for innovation, its potential for harm is equally significant if left unregulated.
Cybersecurity must be the foundation of AI development, not an afterthought. Every major AI company, from OpenAI to DeepSeek, must take responsibility for ensuring that their models do not become tools for cybercriminals. At the same time, policymakers must act swiftly to close the regulatory gaps before the situation spirals out of control.
The risks are real, the threats are evolving. If we fail to act now, we will face a cyber landscape where AI is weaponized against humanity. The time for action is now.
